The covers of the eight Swiss residence permits, differing in terms of colour and right to stay, served as a source material for this work, which raises the question of affiliation. Depending on the order of hanging, the letters are intended to stimulate the viewer to think of words and/or sentences that come up in association with the theme of the right of residence in Switzerland. The residence statuses pertaining to the individual letter are as follows:

G: crosser, cross border commuter
B: residence permit (limited up to 5 years)
N: in the asylum procedure
Ci:residence permit with gainful employment
S: in need of protection
C: residence permit (unlimited/-restricted)
L: brief stay permit (max. 1 Jahr)
F: temporary stay
