ARENA EN LOS OJOS (SAND IN THE EYES), 2017

Site-specific installation
1500kg sand, 98 sandbags (40x60cm), acrylic based matt varnish

The steady sea level rise, one of the effects of climate warming, threatens an increasing number of coastal towns/-regions and islands globally. Cuban climate researchers assume that by the year 2100, 122 Cuban coastal towns will disappear and 38'000 people will likely lose their livelihood, if current global warming proceeds as before.

For the exhibition Ella vale mil pensamientos (Nature is Worth a Thousand Thoughts), dealing with the causes and problems of climate change, I determined 98 affected coastal towns in Cuba and labelled their names on sandbags, which were filled with local sand. The bags were placed in front of all the entrances to the museum's exhibition space.
